What if we are living aspects of our lives as if God doesn’t exist? Have we adopted ways of seeing the world that press us to walk by sight and not by faith? Without God’s revelation to direct human perception of the world, humankind is trapped within the limitations of its own wisdom which can only lead to ruin. Secular ideologies, or ideologies that deny God, are attempts to understand the world and to exert human dominion over creation on humanity’s own terms. As T. S. Elliot wrote in The Rock, “They constantly try to escape from the darkness outside and within by dreaming of systems so perfect that no one will need to be good. But the man that is will shadow the man that pretends to be.”
Any ideology or system that seeks to fix the world through human ingenuity or by human effort apart from God is doomed to fail. When humankind denied God’s wisdom in the beginning, we chose to navigate the world on our own. Yet, there is only one wisdom that resulted in the resurrection and ascension of Christ. Unless we follow it, we substitute that wisdom for a way of life that leads to death.
In Secular Ideologies, James Spencer will provide a framework for identifying and analyzing specific systems of thought classified as “secular” (those that God’s existence), as well as evaluating competing ideologies that may acknowledge the divine but do not recognize the Lordship of Christ. By adopting practical steps that allow us to think theologically about the systems and ideas that confront us on a day-to-day basis, Christians will be better able to develop eyes that see and ears that hear.
